Weeks 8 to 16 are the golden window for puppy socialisation. What they experience now shapes whether your dog grows up confident and friendly, or fearful and anxious. Here's the 2026 updated checklist.
Why socialisation matters so much
A puppy's brain is in an "open learning" state between 8-16 weeks. Things experienced during this window get tagged as "safe" by the brain. Miss the window, and adult re-socialisation is much harder.
Must-do checklist
People and animals
- Meet people of different ages: kids, seniors, men, women
- Meet people who look different: hats, prams, walking sticks
- Meet healthy, vaccinated, friendly adult dogs
- Meet cats (if cohabitation is likely)
Environment and sounds
- Walk on different surfaces: grass, tiles, sand, wood, metal
- Experience different noises: cars, bikes, vacuum, doorbells
- Ride in the car (start with short trips)
- Visit different places: parks, pet shops, quiet streets
Daily handling habits
- Touch paws, ears, mouth regularly (prep for nail trims and tooth brushing)
- Get used to being picked up and put down
- Get used to collar and lead
Cautions
Before full vaccination (usually 12-16 weeks), avoid dog parks and pet shops. You can carry your puppy on the footpath to observe, or invite vaccinated friends' dogs over.
