Cats are independent, but that doesn't mean they need no care. Understanding your cat's needs helps them live a long, healthy life.
Daily care checklist
Grooming
Short-haired cats: brush 2-3 times a week. Long-haired cats (Ragdoll, Persian): daily brushing. It reduces hairballs and builds trust.
Nail trimming
Check every 2-3 weeks. Clear nail can be trimmed; the pink quick must not be cut.
Ear cleaning
Monthly check. Healthy ears are clean and pale pink. Brown discharge or odour may indicate ear mites — see a vet.
Brushing teeth
Many owners overlook dental care. By age 3, most cats have some gum disease. Start young with cat-specific toothpaste (human toothpaste is toxic to cats).
Indoor vs outdoor cats
Indoor cats live 12-18 years on average; outdoor cats typically only 5-7 years. If you love your cat, keeping them indoors is the responsible choice. Consider a cat enclosure (Catio) for safe outdoor time.
